AEO for Small Business: What to Expect in 90 Days
In 90 days of AEO you can fix your facts, build service pages and reviews, and start earning mentions. Nobody can promise a date for being named by AI.
AEO for Small Business: What to Expect in 90 Days
In the first 90 days of AEO, you can do the groundwork: fix your facts, build one strong page per service, collect reviews and start earning mentions on other sites. You cannot count on a result by day 90, because nobody controls what an assistant says. Treat it as a work calendar with honest expectations, not a countdown to a ranking.
AEO, answer engine optimization, is the work of getting recommended by assistants like ChatGPT, as the complete AEO guide explains. If you want the short version, the 30-day plan to get recommended by ChatGPT covers the first month. This post is the longer horizon: what the next three months look like, what to expect at each stage and when to be patient.
What do you do in days 1 to 14?
Start by finding out where you stand. Open a fresh chat and ask what a stranger would ask, such as "who fixes car upholstery in Pharr?", then write down whether you were named, how you were described and who else appeared. The free check on /scan shows the answer ChatGPT gives your customers in a couple of minutes, and how to check what ChatGPT says has the full routine. Save a screenshot and the date. This is your baseline.
Then fix the facts, because nothing built on top of wrong facts holds up. Write your name, address, phone, hours and services once, then make every profile match it.
- Complete your Google profile using the Google Business Profile checklist for Valley businesses.
- Claim the two other profiles that feed answers, covered in Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
- Compare your website, Facebook, Yelp and any directory against your fact sheet, and correct every mismatch at the source.
- Put your hours, prices (or what moves them) and service area on your site as text, not inside a picture.
What do you do in days 15 to 45?
Now you build the material an assistant can quote. Give each main service its own page that answers the questions customers ask before they call. Say a physical therapy clinic in Harlingen treats back pain, sports injuries and post-surgery recovery. That is three pages that each say what you do, for whom, where, how to book and what affects the cost.
Find the real questions first. The 10 kinds of questions customers ask AI gives fill-in templates, and your own inbox and front desk give you the wording. 10 website changes that help AI describe you covers what each page should contain.
Start a review routine in the same window. Ask every customer right after the job, send the direct link from your profile, reply to each review in a sentence or two, and never offer anything in exchange. How to get more Google reviews has the steps and the rules.
What do you do in days 46 to 90?
The third month goes outward and deeper. Outward means mentions on other websites: your chamber of commerce listing, a supplier's page of local dealers, a team you sponsor, a local news story if something newsworthy happened. Backlinks vs brand mentions explains why a mention without a link still counts for something, and why bought ones do not help.
Deeper means more helpful pages on the topics you want to be known for. How to write an article AI will cite covers what makes an article worth quoting: a direct answer up top, specifics only you would know and honest limits.
The third habit is measuring. Pick the dozen or so questions from your baseline and ask them every week in the same words, in a fresh chat, and record the answers. You are not looking for a single answer. You are looking for a pattern across weeks.
Why do changes take weeks to show up?
Because the systems have to come back and read your pages again. A crawler is a program that visits websites so a search tool can read them, and it does not visit every page every day. Google's help page on asking for a recrawl says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and that requesting one does not guarantee inclusion in search results.
Google's SEO Starter Guide puts the whole range plainly: some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months, and you generally want to wait a few weeks before judging whether your work helped. That guide is about Google Search, so apply it as a sense of scale, not as a schedule for any assistant.
OpenAI is more specific about one narrow thing. Its crawler documentation says it can take about 24 hours from a site's robots.txt update for its systems to adjust. That covers a change to which crawlers may visit you. It does not mean new wording on your pages shows up in answers in a day.
What does a good sign look like, and what should you not chase?
Answers can change from one asking to the next, so one answer proves nothing, good or bad. Compare patterns over several weeks. These are signs your work is landing:
- You are named in more of your tracked questions than at your baseline.
- The description is more accurate: the right services, the right city, the right hours.
- The competitors named alongside or ahead of you change from week to week.
- The answers cite sources you worked on, such as your own pages or your profiles.
Some signs feel good and mean little: one lucky answer where you were first, or a competitor missing for a single week. Chasing these tends to push owners toward shortcuts like bought reviews or link packages, which the 7 AEO mistakes explains can do harm.
When should you worry, and when should you be patient?
Be patient when the basics are done and the answers have not moved yet. Weeks one through six are mostly about getting a record that is correct. Reviews and mentions build over months, and nobody can name the week an assistant will notice them.
Worry, or at least investigate, in two cases. First, if your basics are not actually fixed, because a mismatched address or a page that blocks crawlers can hold everything else back. Second, if you finished the work, kept asking the same questions for several weeks and see no change in how you are described. Then compare yourself with the businesses being named, item by item, and close the real gaps. A competitor shows up in ChatGPT and you don't has that checklist.
How much of your time does this take?
As a planning estimate, not a measured figure: plan on roughly six to ten hours across the first two weeks, because hunting down old listings takes longest. Then two or three hours a week through day 45, and one to two hours a week after that, plus about 20 minutes for the weekly recheck if you do it by hand.
The weekly recheck is the part owners drop first, and it is the part that tells you what is working. Four assistants times a dozen questions is around fifty asks per round. The Growrank dashboard does that every week: it shows the exact answer ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity give your customers, which competitors are named instead of you, and sends an alert when your visibility drops, keeping the history so you can see the trend. It costs $39 a month with the first 7 days free, card required, cancel anytime. See the plan.

Frequently asked questions
How long does AEO take to work?
There is no honest fixed answer. Some changes, like a corrected phone number, can show up in weeks. Reviews and mentions build over months. Google's SEO Starter Guide says changes can take a few hours to several months to take effect, and nobody can promise when an assistant will name you.
Will I be recommended by ChatGPT after 90 days?
Maybe, but nobody can promise it. Ninety days is enough to fix your facts, publish service pages, start reviews and earn a few mentions. Whether an assistant names you depends on sources and competitors you do not control, so judge progress by trends in your tracked questions.
Why does ChatGPT give a different answer every time I ask?
Assistants build each answer fresh, and the wording and the businesses named can change between askings and by location. That is why a single answer proves little. Ask the same questions in the same words each week, in a fresh chat, and compare the pattern across several weeks.
What is a good sign that AEO is working?
You are named in more of your tracked questions than at your baseline, the description of your business is accurate, and the competitors named change over time. Sources cited in answers that point to your own pages or profiles are another good sign. One lucky answer is not.
What if nothing changes after 90 days?
First confirm the basics are really fixed: matching facts everywhere, crawlers allowed and a clear page per service. If they are, compare yourself with the businesses being named, item by item, and close the gaps. Keep asking the same questions weekly, because slow improvement is easy to miss.
