Backlinks vs Brand Mentions: What AI Assistants Read

A backlink is a link to your site. A brand mention names your business with no link. Google and AI assistants can read both, but neither publishes the weights.

Backlinks vs Brand Mentions: What AI Assistants Read

A backlink is a clickable link from another website to yours. A brand mention is your business named on another page with no link at all. Google uses links as a signal, and its own guidance says its AI features can reflect what is said about businesses across the web, so both can matter.

Nobody outside Google or the AI companies can tell you how much each one counts, and anyone who quotes an exact weight is guessing. This post covers the difference, why an assistant can read a mention that has no link, and where a local business can earn real ones. It builds on what backlinks are.

Say a chamber of commerce in the Valley lists your roofing company in its member directory and links to your website. That is a backlink. Now say a local news site writes that your crew replaced the roof at a church, names your company and does not link. That is a brand mention.

Google's page on link best practices says Google uses links as a signal for the relevance of pages and to find new pages to crawl. A mention gives Google no path to your site. It does put your name and city next to your trade in plain text, and a reader, or a system reading for the reader, can use that.

Google's documentation describes links as a signal. Its guidance on generative AI search adds that AI features can show what is said about products and services across the web, in blogs, videos and forum discussions. What the documentation does not give is a number or a rule for how much an unlinked mention counts in ordinary rankings.

That guidance also says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem. It points to one sensible goal: be described accurately in places that would talk about you anyway.

An assistant that searches the web retrieves pages and writes an answer from what they say. Google describes its AI features this way, pulling relevant pages from its search index and showing links to pages that support the answer. OpenAI describes ChatGPT search as giving answers with links to sources such as news articles and blog posts.

Say the page reads "Rivera Roofing in Weslaco replaced the church roof". A reader does not need a hyperlink to know who is meant, and a model reading the same words has the same information. How much weight a given assistant gives those words is not published, which is why this post says "can" and not "will".

If a competitor keeps getting named and you do not, look at where that competitor is mentioned. What to do when a competitor shows up in ChatGPT walks through that check.

Where does a local business earn real mentions?

Real mentions come from people and organizations with a reason to name you. For a business in McAllen, Edinburg or Brownsville, the usual sources are these:

  • Local news. A new location, a milestone, or expert advice for a reporter who covers your trade.
  • Your chamber of commerce. Member directories and event pages often list businesses by name.
  • Trade and professional associations. Many keep member-finder pages for customers.
  • Sponsorships. A Little League team, a school fundraiser or a charity run usually names its sponsors on its own page.
  • Suppliers and manufacturers. "Find an installer" and "where to buy" pages list the local businesses that carry or install their products.
  • Community pages. Neighborhood groups, church newsletters, school newsletters and local event calendars.
  • Podcasts and local radio. A guest spot means your name, and often a show-notes page, on the host's site.

A press release can announce something worth a mention, with the limits explained in that post.

One caution on sponsorships and freebies. Google's link spam policy lists exchanging money, goods or services for links, and sending someone a product in exchange for a post that includes a link. Sponsor the team because you want to support it, and do not be surprised if the page tags your link as sponsored or nofollow. That tag is the accepted way to mark it.

  • Write a short fact sheet: business name, city, what you do, the year you started, your phone number and one true detail a reporter could use.
  • Send it to a named person with a reason, such as a new service or a community event, instead of a generic "please feature us".
  • Offer local knowledge. An air-conditioning owner who can explain what a Valley summer does to a compressor is useful to a local reporter.
  • Let them write it in their own words. Do not dictate keyword-heavy link text.
  • Keep every detail identical to your Google Business Profile, and say thank you.

If you would rather have a team handle outreach and placement, Growrank quotes link campaigns and reports every placement with its live URL. The link campaigns page explains how a quote works and that no position is promised. Before you hire anyone for links, read how to spot a spam link.

How do you see who mentions you today?

  • Search your business name in quotes on Google, then add your city.
  • Search your phone number as it is written on your Google Business Profile.
  • Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and read which sources they list.
  • Repeat the check for the competitor that keeps getting named.

The Growrank dashboard automates the assistant part. It records the answers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity give about your business each week and shows which competitors get named instead of you. The complete AEO guide covers the wider picture.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a backlink and a brand mention?

A backlink is a clickable link from another site to yours. A brand mention is your business name appearing on another page with no link. Google's documentation treats links as a signal, and its AI guidance says AI features can reflect what is said about businesses across the web, so mentions can matter too.

Do unlinked mentions help SEO?

Google does not publish how much an unlinked mention counts in ordinary rankings, so treat any exact claim as a guess. Mentions can still help people and AI assistants find and understand your business. Google also warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem, so focus on real ones.

Do AI assistants count backlinks?

Assistants do not publish their rules. Google's AI features rely on its search index, where links are a signal. Other assistants that search the web retrieve pages and cite them, and they can read a mention in the text of a page. Links and mentions from credible pages are both worth earning, and neither is certain to count.

How do I get mentioned in local news?

Give a reporter something specific: a new location, a service change, a community event, or expert advice on a topic they cover. Send a short fact sheet to a named person, keep your details consistent with your Google Business Profile, and accept that coverage is the editor's decision, not yours.

Is it okay to pay for a mention or a link?

Paying for links to influence rankings is what Google's link spam policy targets. Advertising and sponsorship are acceptable when links are marked with a sponsored or nofollow tag. If a provider sells links as a ranking boost, ask which sites will carry them and how they are tagged.
