Why Your McAllen Business Doesn't Show Up in Google's Map Pack
The box with three businesses and a map takes most of the clicks on local searches. Here is what decides who goes in it.
Why Your McAllen Business Doesn't Show Up in Google's Map Pack
Search "dentist mcallen tx" on your phone right now. Before any normal website result, Google shows a map and three businesses. That box is called the map pack, and for a local business it is the whole game.
Being fourth is the same as being fortieth. The box only holds three.
What actually decides the three
Google weighs three things, and they are not the ones most people assume.
- Distance — how close you are to the person searching. You cannot change this, and it is why a practice in Mission can outrank one in McAllen for someone standing in Mission.
- Prominence — how well known you are. Reviews, mentions on other sites, and links. This is the part you can actually build.
- Relevance — how clearly your profile says what you do. Categories, services, hours, photos, and whether the information matches your website.
The three fixes almost nobody bothers with
First: your primary category. Most businesses pick something vague. "Dentist" and "Cosmetic dentist" compete in different boxes, and picking the wrong one keeps you out of the searches you actually want.
Second: review velocity. Google notices a steady trickle of new reviews far more than a big pile of old ones. Five reviews a month beats fifty reviews from 2023.
Third: consistency. If your address is written three different ways across your website, your profile and the directories that list you, Google trusts all three a little less.
How to know where you stand
Checking your own position by searching is unreliable — Google personalizes results based on your location and history, so you will often see yourself higher than a real customer does. You need a tool that checks from a neutral position.
That is one of the numbers our free dashboard reports: your actual position in the box, not the flattering one your own phone shows you. And once you know it, the way to move up is the same thing that moves everything else: building real authority.
