Commercial Intent Searches: Why One Right Search Wins

Commercial intent means the searcher is comparing options and ready to pay. Here is how to spot those searches and build pages that turn them into calls.

City lights at dusk, seen from above

A commercial intent search is one where the person is comparing options and getting ready to pay, such as "best dentist in McAllen for implants". These searches are far fewer than the researching kind, but they are the ones that turn into calls, so a small business usually gets more from a handful of them than from a hundred broad ones.

Say two businesses in Mission run SEO for a year. One triples its traffic. The other adds barely any visitors. The second one signs more customers.

This happens often, and the explanation is intent: how many people found you matters less than what they were trying to do when they did.

The four kinds of searcher

  • Informational: "why does my tooth hurt". Learning. Not buying today.
  • Navigational: "[your practice name] phone number". Already chose you. Already yours.
  • Commercial: "best dentist in McAllen for implants". Comparing. Deciding right now.
  • Transactional: "emergency dentist McAllen open today". Ready to call this minute.

The bottom two are worth the most to a local business. They are also the smallest by volume, which is why research software that ranks phrases by how often they are searched can point people at the wrong ones. The most-searched phrases are often the least ready to buy.

How do you spot commercial intent?

The words give it away. Best, top, near me, cost, price, reviews, hiring, open now, free consultation, and any city name. When a person adds their city, they have usually stopped researching and started shortlisting.

"Personal injury law" is a subject. "Personal injury lawyer Brownsville free consultation" is a prospective client. Here is how the same idea looks for a roofer in Edinburg, from least to most ready to buy:

  • "How long does a shingle roof last" is informational.
  • "Best roofer in Edinburg for storm damage" is commercial.
  • "Roof repair Edinburg TX free estimate" is transactional.

How do you find your own commercial searches?

  • Listen to your calls and read your messages. The words people use when they are ready to book are the searches to build around.
  • Check the search terms in the Performance section of your Google Business Profile, which Google updates monthly.
  • Check the queries in Google Search Console, a free Google tool, to see which searches already bring people to your site.
  • Type your service and city into Google and note the suggestions that drop down. Add words like "best", "cost" and "open now" and watch what changes.
  • Ask an AI assistant the same questions a customer would. People put the same intent into full sentences there, as covered in the 10 questions customers ask AI.

What should a page for a commercial search contain?

  • A first sentence that says what you do and where.
  • How pricing works. A range or the factors that move the price answers the question people came with, so state only what is true for your business.
  • Proof: real reviews, real photos of local work, the areas you serve.
  • A clear next step, such as a phone number or a booking button, visible without scrolling.
  • Short answers to the questions people ask before hiring, such as timing, payment and what happens next.

Cost is a good example of a commercial word. People who search for a price are weighing whether to buy. If you are weighing marketing help yourself, how much SEO costs for a small business is the kind of page that answers a commercial search directly.

Where does informational content still earn its place?

It builds the authority that helps the commercial pages rank, and it gives AI assistants something to read when deciding whether you know your subject. That makes it the foundation of the work.

But it should be the foundation, not the roof. Write the commercial pages first, then support them with depth. Many businesses do it backwards and wonder why the traffic never turns into calls.

AI answers are commercial intent by default

One more reason this matters now. When someone asks an assistant "who is the best X in my city", that is a purely commercial question, and the assistant usually answers with a few names instead of a list to browse.

The highest-intent search there is now returns the fewest options. Being in that answer is the whole objective, and it is built the same way: depth, authority and clarity about who you are and where. Start with owning a topic.

How do you know it is working?

Count outcomes such as calls, forms, direction requests and bookings, and note which searches produced them. The Growrank dashboard shows which of your rankings bring buyers and which bring nobody, and the searches you are one push away from winning, checked weekly. The pricing page has the details.

Frequently asked questions

What is commercial intent in SEO?

Commercial intent describes a search where the person is comparing options and close to choosing, such as "best roofer in Edinburg" or "AC repair Pharr free estimate". These searches are usually fewer than research searches, but they come from people much closer to paying, so they tend to be worth more to a local business.

Is it better to target high-volume keywords or commercial searches?

For most local businesses, commercial searches. A phrase searched often by people who are only researching can bring plenty of visits and few customers. A phrase searched less often by people ready to hire can bring more of them. Check which searches actually lead to calls, then focus there.

How can I tell which searches bring me customers?

Track outcomes, not only visits: calls, form submissions, direction requests and bookings, and note which pages and searches they came from. Google Business Profile and Google Search Console both show search terms. The Growrank dashboard also shows which of your rankings bring buyers and which bring nobody.

Do AI assistants change which searches matter?

They make commercial intent more visible, because people ask an assistant questions like "who is the best roofer in Edinburg" and get a short list of names. Being in that list matters more than a high position on a broad phrase. Clear pages, reviews and mentions on other sites improve your odds.
